A forum for a legal information site, set up and then fixed two years on
I set up a forum for a legal information site with social login and ad placement, then came back two years later when a third-party update broke it.
The objective
The client wanted a forum on their existing domain that people could sign into with Facebook, that would carry Google AdSense, and that matched the look of the site it sat on. They also wanted the initial board structure set up, not just an empty install handed over.
What I did
I installed and configured phpBB on their domain, styled it to the site's existing logo and colours, and set up the first run of boards and subboards.
I enabled social login and social sharing, with Facebook as the main one, and installed and configured the advertising extension for the AdSense placement.
One of the third-party plugins had a bug. I raised it with the plugin's author and worked with them until it was fixed, rather than handing back a forum that only half worked.
Two years later the client came back after another third-party update stopped working. I found the cause, made the changes it needed, upgraded phpBB, and added antispam while I was in there.
The result
The forum went live with the login, sharing and ad setup they'd asked for, and was still worth maintaining two years on.
