Fifteen months of site work for a nonprofit council

Eighteen orders over fifteen months on a nonprofit council's site: pages, a course section, narrated video, interactive cards, and the constant copy changes that come with an organisation still figuring itself out.

The objective

The client runs a nonprofit council whose members are experts, and they publish public education material. Their site wasn't a build that finished and got handed over. It grew week by week as the organisation worked out its own rules as it went.

Most requests came in as a page address and a paragraph of replacement text, or a file with an instruction attached. A lot of the value here is just doing exactly what's asked, quickly, and saying so when something can't be done.

What I did

I built and extended the pages: an about section with an FAQ, a course page, and interactive cards that carried audio and images on the reverse.

I added narrated videos to the pages they named, in the spots they wanted, with the captions they'd specified.

When a request didn't have a good answer, I said so. Syncing a written script to the narration in a video wasn't something the site could do, and the honest option was subtitles baked into the video itself.

I also read through a list of proposed application features and told them which ones would actually work on the web version and which wouldn't, instead of nodding along to all of it and finding out the hard way later.

The result

Eighteen orders between April 2022 and July 2023, ending with the site carrying their courses and their published positions.
