Four rounds of phpBB and theme updates for a design studio
A studio wanted one forum and its purchased theme kept current, rather than calling for help every time something broke. The same update ran four times between 2019 and 2021.
The objective
The client ran a forum on a purchased theme and didn't want to deal with updates themselves. They wanted someone available now and then to keep both the software and the theme current.
The first round also had a broken SSL setup throwing insecure content warnings, and they wanted AdSense placed in the board.
What I did
I updated phpBB to the current version and brought the purchased theme up to match, which each time meant checking whether the theme's template changes still held on the new version.
I installed and configured the AdSense extension.
I fixed the insecure SSL warnings.
Then I ran the same update three more times over the next two years as new versions came out.
The result
The same update got done four times across two years without the board going down or the theme breaking.
