Case studies
Each one is a full write-up of what the client needed, what I did and how it turned out. These are selected projects, not a complete list. Repeat work of the same kind is written up once rather than every time.
A club forum moved off a server that was being shut down
A vehicle club's forum moved to new hosting, with everything copied off the old server before it was cancelled. That's what saved the photo albums when the club found their own backup was incomplete.
A heavily customised forum moved off PHP 5.6
A long-running community board with years of custom code, updated to run on PHP 7 and MySQL 8 before its host forced the change.
An archive forum imported into a current phpBB
A long-running community archive moved onto a current phpBB, including accounts the old software had let share an identifier, and the links from the main site that pointed into individual posts.
A forum going down under bot traffic
A sports community board kept falling over, and the hosting company's line was that it used too many resources. The load was actually coming from crawlers hammering search, not from members.
Mailboxes moved to Google Workspace with the DNS to match
A customer's mail moved off shared hosting onto Google Workspace, including addresses that were separate mailboxes on one side and aliases into a single inbox on the other.
A forum updated after a denial of service attack
A technical community board had been knocked over repeatedly and the owner had put it behind a CDN himself. It was still on an old version, which is the likely way in.
